Every patio starts with a design conversation on-site — how you'll actually use the space, how it ties into your house and yard grading, and what will hold up through a Petoskey winter. We build a scaled layout before any excavation starts, so you know exactly what you're getting.
Underneath every patio is 8 to 10 inches of compacted aggregate base, depth adjusted for your soil (the clay pockets around Charlevoix behave very differently than the sandy soil closer to Lake Michigan). We use woven geotextile fabric to keep the base from migrating into the subgrade, hidden edge restraints to keep the field locked in place, and polymeric jointing sand that resists both weed growth and the washout that plain sand suffers during spring melt.
We install Unilock and Techo-Bloc paver lines, both of which carry lifetime color and structural warranties and are rated for our climate. Every patio grades away from the house at minimum 1/4 inch per foot, so you're not fighting standing water or ice buildup near your foundation.

How deep does the base need to be for a patio to survive Michigan winters?
We install 8 to 10 inches of compacted aggregate base, adjusted for your specific soil. Skimping on base depth is the single most common reason patios heave and settle unevenly after a few freeze-thaw cycles — it's not a corner worth cutting.
How long does a paver patio installation take?
Most patios take 3 to 7 working days from excavation to final sweep-in, depending on size, drainage complexity, and whether we're building a seat wall or fire feature into the design. We'll give you a firm window before work starts.
Can you install pavers over an existing concrete patio?
Almost never — we remove the existing concrete first. Building over it traps moisture and skips the compacted base that keeps the new patio flat through winter, so it's not something we'll do even if it's faster.
